For someone who is currently not consuming sugar, I find it funny that I am so drawn to sugar scrubs these days. Maybe I'm just indulging my sweet tooth somewhere else since I haven't been allowing myself to eat the sweet stuff. Sugar scrubs are sent from heaven. They smell amazing, gently remove dead cells, revitalize your skin, and leave everything feeling so soft and smooth. Can you tell I'm on board?
I've bought numerous body exfoliants over the years, including both sugar and salt scrubs, and while I love the power they have, I've find it so rewarding to make my own. I know exactly what is going in (and let me tell you, it's not much) and can customize the essential oils I use to meet my needs as the seasons change. Not to mention it is just flat out fun to concoct your own combinations.
I made this version using lavender, lemon, and rosemary for a friend last weekend. Lavender oil is known to be calming and stress-reducing, and is basically considered a power tool in the essential oil world. It is good for just about anything, including cuts and general skin health, so it never hurts to use in skin products. Lemon is revitalizing and refreshing, not to mention anti-fungal and anti-viral (so naturally, never a bad idea). And rosemary, well it just rounds out the fragrance combination. It is calming and relaxing, like lavender, but does it's part to help on the bacterial and fungal side as well. Together, these oils make this sugar scrub smell heavenly.
1/4 cup of cane sugar
1/4 cup of white sugar
1/4 cup of coconut oil, melted
6-8 drops of essential oil
Combine the sugars in a small bowl. Allow the melted coconut oil to cool slightly before adding to the sugars. Mix to combine. If the mixture feels too soft, add some more sugar. The mixture should clump together but not be liquid. Once the desired consistency is reached, add the drops of essential oils in whatever combination and proportions you desire (in the case of the above sugar scrub, 3 lavender drops, 3 lemon drops, and 2 rosemary drops were added). Mix the sugar scrub until essential oils are incorporated. Divide into air-tight containers. Wrap with twine or ribbon and label the contents however you please.
The beauty of this recipe is that you could make as much or as little as you would like, just by adjusting the measurements accordingly. All the primary ingredients are equal parts and the essential oils can be adjusted based on personal preferences.
The best part? It is so good for gifting. Share the love and the sweets!
I'd love to know how it goes for you so feel free to share in the comments below. Have a sweet weekend, friends.
